Sneak Peek: Wood Invitations

Here it is. I've talked about it. And finally, here it is. Beautiful, gorgeous pictures of our wood veneer invitations, available for our two collections and for all custom orders. Above is Joie Studio's Malibu design, printed on birdseye maple. I think the birdseye pattern within the wood is such a lovely effect with the sea-themed invitation.

The wood glimmers and shines in the light, making it an altogether different experience from paper. It is simply gorgeous. And eco-friendly, too. The wood is sustainably-harvested American wood and is as minimally processed as you can get. I absolutely love it. Below is our South Asian inspired Madras design on birch wood:

Every wood invitation has a slightly different pattern and grain, making it totally unique. A long long time ago, I tested out letterpress printing on wood. I loved it but never really had the time to price it out and add it to Joie Studio's repertoire. These past six months, I'm finally comfortable enough with the pricing and the results to offer wood veneer as an option for invitations. Wood veneer is now an upgrade option for custom design work and all Joie Studio designs, either flat printed or letterpress printed. We are offering birch, maple, aspen, red cedar, and birdseye maple as options. It's such a fun eco-friendly alternative - the wood is sustainably harvested, grown in the USA, and has been minimally processed, using no chemical or water to produce the wood veneer. Did you know it takes less wood to create wood veneer sheets than it does to create a similarly sized piece of cardstock (unless you're Joie Studio and use only 100% recycled, cotton, or bamboo cardstock, of course). I love that when I call my supplier, the response on inventory is, "Let me see if we have any of those logs." It really is straight from a tree.

I am going to officially debut our wood veneer invitations at the National Stationery Show in May, but hopefully by Friday I will be able to give you some sneak peeks of the wood veneer invitations.

Letterpress Wedding Invitations on Wood!

So awhile ago, I mentioned that I was testing out letterpress on wood. I was printing a custom wedding order and decided to test the wood with real invitation text. Some of the woods passed with flying colors and I am so excited to start offering wood as an eco-savvy (and oh so cool) option for custom letterpress wedding invitations! How are these pieces of wood more eco-friendly? Made from wood veneer, these small pieces of wood are cut from wood grown in private lots, are produced using less electricity and chemicals than regular paper, produce no VOC's in the process, and are recyclable! It's a great, truly eco-alternative to paper, and a truly distinctive option for wedding invitations. In the picture below are the four wood types I tested on. On top is cherry, which printed pretty well.

Below is aspen. I love the color of the wood and its shimmer. It's thinner than the rest of the woods, so I have to figure out a good backing for it (though I have a pretty good idea already) before it is offered with the rest of the woods.

I absolutely love the effect on maple below. It's a bit lighter than the cherry and provides a good contrast to the chocolate ink that I was using.

My favorite by far is red cedar, for its richness and color. The chocolate looked so so beautiful against the red cedar that this is what I would recommend to anyone looking for letterpress wedding invitations on wood.
