Los Angeles Printer's Fair This Saturday!

OK so this is the 3rd time Joie Studio will be participating in the Los Angeles Printers Fair.  We always have a lot of fun at this event, especially since we not only sell a sampling of our letterpress papergoods, we also bring a bunch of letterpress supplies and have sort of a mini garage sale on envelopes, paper, and other doodads and knick-knacks.  So come on out to Carson on Saturday!

Say hi!  Oh, and I'll have a little gift item for you if you show me that you follow Joie Studio on Twitter or Facebook.  So easy-peasy.  Come, "like" or "follow" Joie Studio, and get a little love from us!

Unique LA Tomorrow & Sunday!

It's crazy here in Pasadena, California! A huge windstorm hit us Wednesday night and the studio is now almost cut off from civilization! There are chainsaws going everywhere as people try to clear the debris of fallen trees and we were unfortunate that our fences didn't hold up to the 50+ mph winds. Luckily, we're going to be at Unique LA this weekend sharing Booth #129 with the ever talented Kimiko Design (gorgeous handmade pillows people!) this weekend, not dealing with the mess and celebrating some good ole holiday cheer with locally produced goods. Come on by, pick up some letterpress gifts and goodies, including a FREE with purchase pinwheel! See you there!

Hitched Event Recap

I cajoled my mother to watch JoieBaby on Thursday, September 23rd, so I could go to Hitched at the Smog Shoppe. Now, I've been to the Smog Shoppe for events before and it's just a really neat place to have smaller events. Here are some of the pictures I was able to take. Unfortunately my camera's memory card was near capacity so I wasn't able to take that many photos or else there'd be dozens of gorgeous shots of this gorgeous events on this post!

The make-your-own gift bag area - love the cubby shelf and vintage metal rack - I want them:

Urbanic's gift bag:

Enjoy Cupcake's deliciousness - love the mercury glass accents:

Urbanic brought a gorgeous display of letterpress invitations (shown below are Spark's I believe):

Beautiful floral display at Snippet & Ink's table:

Beautiful table designs:

And beautiful calligraphy at 100 Layer Cake's table:

I loved this event - if you don't want a run-of-the-mill wedding, there were so so many gorgeous idea here, including the use of Otter Pops:

I hope you enjoyed the pictures! If you're sad you missed the party, don't worry, I heard a rumor that the next Hitched Event has already been planned for the new year in Palm Springs but don't quote me on that!

Get Hitched Tonight!

I'm so excited to be attending Hitched tonight! My mom is going to take care of Joie Baby (or should I say "Joie Little Boy" now?) so I can go. So lucky she is visiting from Hawaii! I'll try to remember to bring a camera so I can share the event.

Unique OC Recap: Pop Candy

I don't know if I want to admit this, but when I was at the BUST Craftacular holiday show in LA this past Christmas, I sampled an ungodly amount of POP Candy's brittle. And at every Unique LA show I sneak some of the delicious brittle in. It's SO good. So good. So good they have never ever made it all the way home. Here's some delectable pictures:

Golly, I suddenly have a craving for something sweet...

Okay, that's it for my Unique OC recap. I really enjoyed being a part of a smaller crowd at Unique OC, and I hope the attendance skyrockets as Sonja and her Unique crew work out the kinks of the show. I hope you enjoyed seeing some of the vendors that I met and enjoyed!

Happy Friday! Hope you've got great weekend plans!

Unique OC Recap: Paper Pastries

Our neighbors to the back of us at Unique OC was Paper Pastries, whose proprietor Margaret was super sweet. If you've ever wondered what the difference is between "stamping" and "letterpress," take a look at Margaret's cards and then take a look at Joie Studio's cards. Her cards are stamped. Ours are letterpressed. There is a definite difference in terms of technique, materials, ink, and outcome.

I love love love her booth setup. I absolutely covet her stamp stand:
Her "I left my heart in..." is pretty cool -- I love how you can choose the city that you left your heart in (though I don't know if I saw Honolulu there!), and it rather reminds me that Joie Studio had an "I {heart} LA" card that we should reprint:
Loved meeting you and your boyfriend Margaret!

Unique OC Recap: Lulu Dee

J
I had the pleasure of meeting Laura (and her husband and dog) of Lulu Dee. It's always great to meet another letterpress printer, and I loved talking shop with Laura. My booth always seems so spartan next to these booth setups with props and such. But when you have so many cards and such to fit into a six year old Mazda 3...ah well...anyway, let me lust over the table setup a little bit with the vintage typewriter, chalkboard, phone, and desk accessories.

Nice meeting you all!

Unique OC Recap: Super Rad Booth Neighbor Detroit Sprinkles

You know, when you sit at a booth all day, especially at one of these outdoor things, sometimes you talk to your neighbors a lot, and sometimes you don't at all. The guys at Detroit Sprinkles were super chill, and really super awesome guys to sit around with all day and shoot the breeze with.
I love their signs, and their packaging (below) is pretty awesome:

The more I saw people buy their tanks and tees, the more I wanted something...anything. But alas, I am saving for some letterpress machinery and supplies so I will have to pick up some sprinkley goodness another time.

Thanks for keeping me company, Detroit Sprinkles!

Unique OC Recap: Joie Studio's Booth

Okay, it took a week, but I am finally recovered from Unique OC. I finally downloaded the pictures from my camera, and here they are! Here are some new cards that were on display at Unique OC, "Programmed to Love" in the top left and our newest collaboration with Shop Toast, "Cheeky Faces" in the middle row:
There are the four Cheery Cheeky Faces, and one Sorry Cheeky Face (below):
Also debuting at Unique OC were the "Hawaiian Style" series, which we placed right in front of our "Old Hawaii" cards:
A new setup for craft fairs that I am trying out showcases Joie Studio's custom work. I need to tweak it a little bit, but I really like it. We set the table for three different invitations...
...asking the question, "What's your style?" (below):
We showcased some invitations that we will be showcasing soon on the blog, including Starfish (below):
and the lovely invitation suite designed by Jennifer Olmstead (below):

The rest of the week will be dedicated to recapping Unique OC and featuring some Unique OC vendors that I really enjoyed meeting. To my San Francisco friends and fans: I will be bringing an abbreviated version of this setup to the J-Pop Summit September 18th, so come visit!

OMG. I cannot believe that tomorrow is Unique OC. I have been so wrapped up in some custom letterpress wedding invitation work that I've neglected the blog for almost a week. *Sigh* There is only one of me and many many things to do.

But anyhow, all you OC people should come to Unique OC! We will be really close to the Singha Lounge (that's right, FREE Singha, people!). Here's what the deal with Unique OC is:

Unique OC in less than 2 weeks!

Okay, so last Friday I went to the vendor meeting for the upcoming Unique OC at The Lab, put on by the same awesome organizers who put on Unique LA, and I have to say that they are going to bring the same awesome radness to Orange County in less than 2 weeks!

For just $5, you get entry for both days, which includes (I kid you not):
  • 75 awesome southern California designers (including Joie Studio!)
  • FREE soft drinks and a hosted bar & beer garden (read -- all drinks FREE!)
  • Gourmet food trucks
  • Awesome music
I will be there, along with a bunch of brand spankin' new letterpress designs (the ink is barely dry on some of them). Also, if there are any brides out there who would like a consultation with me, I am happy to block out some time to talk to you about your wedding. Just email me and we will set aside some time for you.

Hopefully I will see you there August 14th and/or 15th!

Pics of Some Letterpress Goodness at Renegade Craft LA

I went Saturday with JoieBaby, my gal Friday Dee and Dee's baby to the 2nd annual Renegade Craft here in LA. You know, after going to Renegade, I might just change my opinion of vending in the summers. Economy down or not, people were loving (and buying!) the handmade goodness. Here are some pics that I managed to take of some of my letterpress friends and colleagues.

Tiselle's awesome sign

Sycamore Street Press came all the way from Utah!

Shino and Fugu Fugu Press
JoieBaby was pretty unhappy as his nap was interrupted and he was hot, so it was a quicker trip than I would have liked. I also met (FINALLY!) Mable from Lala Press / Dee & Lala after emailing for years and even borrowing her pallet jack when we moved! Our pics of her booth were not so good sadly.

Seeing all this cool signage made me realize that I have to up my game when it comes to Joie Studio's signage at these events. Hmm...to the drawing board!
