Our Newest Friends...and Our Newest Addition!

I'm sorry I haven't posted lately. My world has been just one hot mess! But I think we're almost back on track.

First, and most exciting, is Joie Studio's newest friends Fugu Fugu Press. I met Ken and Shino back in May at the National Stationery Show and loved talking with them. They are also based in Pasadena, which made it exciting. When I was looking for space for Joie Studio's newest addition, I approached Ken and Shino, and they were so nice as to let me plop our newest acquisition in their shop:

It's a Vandercook 4! Notice the cabinet doors in front? It makes it an "Old Style" Vandercook 4. Later models have open shelves and drawers on the bottom. An interesting thing about this press is that it is a factory rebuild, as evidenced by the "99-" in the serial number.

More glamour shots of the Vandercook:

Notice the delivery tray in the bottom left corner of the last picture? I need to go get some nuts to secure the delivery tray onto the Vandercook. Did you see Fugu Fugu's cards in the background?

Here are some pictures of the Fugu Fugu shop:

There's an awesome vintage gas station outside the shop, and in the shop, Fugu Fugu prints everthing on a black ball Heidelberg and a 12 x 18 C&P. More pics of Fugu Fugu Press can be found on their website.

Woo Hoo! Holiday Event Schedule!

I just got word tonight that Joie Studio has been accepted into Felt Club: Holiday 2008 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. That, combined with Joie Studio's glorious return to San Francisco for Bazaar Bizarre, makes a pretty darn nice holiday fair schedule thus far. I'm very very excited about this lineup because it has been a goal of mine for Joie Studio to have a booth at Felt Club, and I am in absolute L-O-V-E with everyone I met up in the Bay area at the last Bazaar Bizarre and have been itching to go back for the holiday show.

I've posted the event schedule on the right here on the blog and will add to it if I decide to do another show.

Yay! I'm so excited!

Congratulations Cheryl and Andrew!

A couple months ago, Cheryl approached me to letterpress her wedding invitations that she drew and designed herself. There were several unique features in this project. First, Cheryl wanted to get open-end envelopes for her letterpress wedding invitations. As luck would have it, my friendly neighborhood paper supplier had just begun stocking open-end Crane's Lettra envelopes. Second, she wanted the invitation and the enclosure card to both be #10 sized, and she wanted guests to be able to perforate part of the enclosure off to use as a reply postcard. And of course, all the corners were rounded by yours truly. The result is gorgeously textured with a deep blueberry blue color atop the ecru colored cardstock. I also love that the enclosure card perforates and guests keep a part of the enclosure as the map.

Floral Accents

With floral centerpieces in the studio, I decided to use it as props for some of our past projects. From top to bottom, it's my own business card, a letterpress baby announcement card, and LUXE letterpress' Siena letterpress invitation.

Back from the other side of town...

You know, I grumble about going to Beverly Hills mostly because there's no real easy way of getting from Pasadena to Beverly Hills. Today I made the trek to a networking event at Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, and it was a trip well worth it. It is one of the most beautiful venues that I have been to in the greater Los Angeles area in a long time. And, I have to be honest, driving down Sunset Boulevard on my way home did make me feel just a tad bit more cool and chic and Hollywood.

The photos of Greystone Mansion are from the city of Beverly Hills, and they do not do the Mansion justice. I should have brought my camera. I really should have, because the venue was absolutely amazing with its panoramic views of Los Angeles, gorgeous exteriors, and beautiful English gardens. It felt like I walked into a fairy tale castle. And that's really saying something considering how many European castles and palaces I've been to! The best part is that when there's not a wedding, it's a park, and the grounds and the exteriors of the mansion are free for everyone and anyone to enjoy!

I'm going to share more as soon as I decompress a bit from the excitement of meeting new people and making new wedding contacts.

New Website: A Letterpress Wedding by Joie Studio

Remember that gorgeous photo of Megan's invitation that I posted awhile back? I've been working on contacting my past clients and their wedding photographers to help out with this new project of mine called "A Letterpress Wedding." As this blog site is about all the goings-on at Joie Studio, I wanted there to be a blog site that was more of a showcase of actual letterpress invitations and the weddings that they were designed for. When I was planning my wedding, I got so much inspiration from looking at other people's weddings that I hope "A Letterpress Wedding" is a resource for people getting married, showcasing great designs, beautiful color schemes, and gorgeous photography. Let me know what you think!

Word of mouth only gets you so far...

For the last year, Joie Studio has been operating almost exclusively on word of mouth advertising. We've had great support from some really rocking design blogs like hapa hale, Paper Crave, and Poppytalk, which has been great for business, and our clients have been so happy with us that we've gotten some really great referrals for new clients. But, you know, at some point, word of mouth can only go so far.

So Joie Studio is now listed on The Knot, The Wedding Channel, and Partyspot! I absolutely love how The Wedding Channel ad is set up especially as the LUXE letterpress logo is on top. I'm excited to join The Knot community, too! I know when I getting married, The Wedding Channel and The Knot were wonderful resources, and I'm excited that Joie Studio is a part of that!

Anatomy of a Custom Letterpress Baby Shower Invitation

Here is Joie Studio's first anatomy lesson, where I'll take you through the making of a custom letterpress baby shower invitation from start to finish. Here at Joie Studio, we meld old and new letterpress techniques to get our desired results, and this baby shower invitation, more than many other projects here at the studio, showcases the different techniques we use, making it a great project to use for our anatomy lesson.

Concept
This project is actually for a very dear friend of mine, so Rebecca, the host of the baby shower, gave me a free rein to do whatever I wanted. I knew that the couple were decorating the nursery with a hippo theme, and as there is a hippo in Joie Studio's upcoming baby line, I decided that it would be the perfect design.

The hippo is part of a safari group that was created and illustrated by the ever talented artist Matt Cox. I laid out the shower invite digitally to figure out how the layout and spacing. Here is the digital proof:

The fonts in the proof are Kabel and Liberty. Kabel is the digital version of Sans Serif Light, and Liberty is a variation of Bernhard Cursive. Both these fonts are fonts that I have handset type for.

Setting the Forme
Here at Joie Studio, we use a combination of handset type and magnesium plates to letterpress our projects.

Here is what a case of type looks like:

To set it, you would take each letter out, one by one, and set it on a line. Time consuming, but I think that handset type gives the best result so I keep as many fonts as I can fit into my type cabinet. The case above is pretty empty, but some of the other drawers weigh as much as 50 lbs.

As space is a major consideration and setting type is majorly time consuming, we also use metal plates. The metal plates are etched from digital files that we send to the engraver's. We used to have our metal plates mounted on wood and we still use a lot of our plates that we had made that way:

I found, however, that I wasn't happy with the natural variations of the wood mount. As it's an organic material, wood will expand and contract depending on weather conditions, and with letterpress, even 1/1000 of a difference will translate onto paper. Sometimes it's ok, sometimes it's not. So now we order unmounted metal plates with a deeper etch that we mount onto a metal base. The deeper etch also allows us to give a deeper impression to our clients who want to go as deep as possible. Here's a closeup of an unmounted metal plate:

For this project, we used a combination of handset type for the text and a metal plate for the hippo illustration. Once the type is set, I use wood pieces called furniture to lock the set type into the chase (which is the frame that fits into the press). What is to be printed, once set, is called the forme, shown below:

Most ink colors are handcrafted by yours truly. Sage is a color that I use a lot so whenever I mix sage, I try to make a bunch extra. For letterpress, you don't use very much ink at all during a run. I store handcrafted inks in little 2oz tins, and as you can tell, I rarely mix that much ink, and this amount will last me through at least 2 more jobs:

Just a couple dabs gets the press to look like:

So after I letterpress printed the forme, the invitations looked like this:

It's still missing the hippo. The hippo is on an unmounted metal plate. To print the plate, it is first locked into a metal base, also known as a honeycomb or patent base:

The forme is then set into the press to be printed:

Notice the roller bearers on both sides? The bearers keep the rollers inking the forme properly, which is essential for gorgeous letterpress printing.

The Result
Here is the result of all that hard work:

I hope you love the result as much as I did, and I hope you enjoyed a peak at our letterpress process from concept to creation. The LUXE letterpress launch has taken up so much of my time that now that it's launched, I can turn my attention to debuting these gorgeous letterpress animals. Keep on the lookout for more animals in Joie Studio's upcoming baby line!

Amazing Photography...

I'm working on a new project right now (there are always internal projects here at Joie Studio!) which involves getting photographs of Joie Studio letterpress and design work from actual weddings. This project is proving to be so rewarding because I absolutely love how to see how Joie Studio's work fits in with the rest of the wedding. Cassandra Dieterle in Honolulu shared some amazing photos of Joie Studio's invitations that she took! Cassandra is so wonderful and professional - and the shots that she sent me were pure eye candy. How absolutely gorgeous does the invitation look in the photo? This is just a teaser because there is more gorgeousness to come when the new project launches! Thanks, Cassandra!

LUXE letterpress on design blogs!

Thank you to Leigh at hapa hale, Kristen at Paper Crave, and Jan at Poppytalk for sharing the launch of LUXE letterpress!
One of the favorites thus far seems to be the Seville letterpress wedding invitation design, which was inspired by all the great Mediterranean tile designs out there. It's one of the favorite LUXE letterpress designs here at the studio as well -- my husband loves this design.
